THE PAST

AGED SIXTEEN

For the rest of that weekend my cell goes off constantly with either a missed call or text from Jackson. I can't stomach the thought of talking to him, though, so I leave them all unanswered. I can see the questions on Daddy and Jane's faces and again my stomach was vacant with the need to tell them what is going on.

That Monday the thought of going into school and have most of my high school look and laugh at me makes me physically ill and I know as soon as I explain to Daddy what's wrong he will just laugh at me and tell me to go anyway.

I am doomed. As I walk the steps to my own trial I can feel their stares already penetrating my back but I manage to gulp down the never-ending sea of nerves as they block my throat, threatening to cut off my airway.

“Whoo, Jackson, look at my new look.”

“Whoo, Jackson, I want you.”

“Jackson, Jackson, Jackson.” They taunt me as I walk closer and closer to school and I try to just ignore them but it gets harder as their taunts grow louder the further I get into school. For the first time since I went away with Jane I can't help but wish I’d never gone with her. Never allowed myself the chance to feel better about myself. I get to my locker and as I open it to get my stuff for my next class I feel his presence like a gush of cold air attacking every part of my body.

“Why haven’t you answered my calls, Kitty Kat?” I get the stuff I need out of my locker and then slam the door shut.

“I…I don’t know.”

“I think you do.”

“Oh really. Please tell me?”

“I think you’re attracted to me and you don’t know how to handle it.” He looks so proud of himself as he says it, like he just worked out a massive equation.

“Me…” I place my hand over my heart looking at him with confusion, just hoping that I make my point known and take him down a peg or two.

“Me. You think I’m attracted to you?”

“I know you are.”

“You know I am. What makes you think that?” He leans his head slightly to his left side.

“Oh, come on. Perhaps I like it. Perhaps I feel the same way.”

“Yeah, right. You’re Jackson Bryant, you can do better.”

“Maybe I don’t care about that.” He looks around the hall we’re standing in, then back to me.

“Maybe I want you just as much as you want me.” I wish that were true but my heart screams the truth. It's all lies. One boy walks past us, making kissing noises.

“Oooh Jackson.”

“For fuck’s sake, Damien, shut up.” Jackson shouts out.

“Oh come on, dude, it’s only Catherine.” I can see the anger flush through his system as he tries to fight off the need to hurt Damien. I do love the way he gets all protective of me, I just wish it meant more than friendship.
